What’s Worth Knowing Before Planning a Mountain Photo Session? Tips from a Zakopane Photographer
Before choosing a location, consider the following:
- Season: Spring and summer are theoretically the best times for outdoor sessions in the Tatra Mountains. However, autumn offers beautiful golden landscapes, and winter adds a fairytale atmosphere but requires more preparation, which I’ll discuss later.
- Weather: The Tatra Mountains are known for changeable weather, so it’s worth having a backup plan. It’s also worth trusting a local photographer who has experience shooting in the mountains.
- Access: Some locations require a longer hike, which needs to be factored into the session timing. There are also places you can easily reach by car.
- Permits and permissions: Some places, such as in Tatra National Park, may require additional permits. A local wedding photographer will definitely ensure the session takes place legally 🙂

1. Kasprowy Wierch
Kasprowy Wierch is one of the most famous places in the Tatra Mountains. Located at an elevation of 1987 m above sea level, it offers spectacular views of the entire mountain range. It’s an ideal spot for couples who dream of an outdoor session against the backdrop of majestic peaks.
- Elevation: 1987 m above sea level
- Best season: spring and autumn (winter conditions are very demanding, but not impossible for a photo session)
- Pros: spectacular views of the Tatras, cable car access, definitely one of the most beautiful places in all of Poland.
- Cons: cable car fee, tourist crowds (I can avoid crowds by choosing the right time and day for photos)
- Tips: It’s best to take the first or last cable car to avoid tourists. Even though Kasprowy Wierch is very easy to reach, remember that these are high mountains and it’s good to be properly prepared. Mountain boots are a must (I’ve refused to photograph when I saw high heels), as well as warm clothing and something to drink and eat.

2. Rusinowa Polana
Rusinowa Polana is one of the most picturesque places in the Tatra Mountains, offering a panoramic view of the highest peaks. It’s easily accessible, making it suitable for couples who don’t want a long hike.
- Best season: year-round
- Pros: easy access, ideal spot for a session at any time of day
- Cons: can be crowded during peak season. In summer months, the parking lot at the entrance to Rusinowa Polana fills up very quickly
- Tips: a great option for couples who don’t want a long hike. The walk to Rusinowa Polana takes about 50 minutes. Although the route isn’t difficult, I recommend wearing appropriate footwear and bringing a jacket, regardless of the season.

3. Chochołowska Valley
Chochołowska Valley is the largest valley in the Polish Tatra Mountains, known for its spring carpets of crocuses and beautiful views of the Western Tatras. It’s an ideal place for wedding and engagement photo sessions.
- Best season: spring and autumn
- Pros: wide open spaces, beautiful views of the Western Tatras
- Cons: may require a long walk
- Tips: a great place for rustic and boho sessions. In spring, Chochołowska Valley turns into a purple sea of crocuses – an ideal backdrop for a romantic session. If your outfit allows, I recommend biking to Chochołowska Valley.

4. Łapszanka
Łapszanka is one of the more intimate places for a wedding photo session, although it’s been beloved by wedding photographers for some time now, which doesn’t surprise me. Located near the Polish-Slovak border, it offers a peaceful atmosphere and a panoramic view of the Belianske and High Tatras.
- Best season: summer and autumn
- Pros: tranquility, view of the entire Tatra range
- Cons: requires car access
- Tips: an ideal place for couples seeking an intimate atmosphere. It’s one of the lesser-known spots that offers fairytale-like views.

5. Ždiar (Slovakia)
Ždiar is a picturesque village in Slovakia, known for its traditional architecture and amazing views of the Belianske Tatras. It’s a great alternative for couples who want to avoid crowded trails.
- Best season: summer and autumn
- Pros: picturesque village with views of the Belianske Tatras, no tourist crowds
- Cons: need to cross the border
- Tips: Ždiar is a great place for a wedding photo session in the Tatras when the weather isn’t perfect. Usually when the view in Poland is poor, Ždiar doesn’t disappoint 🙂

6. Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy
This is one of the most spectacular places in the Tatra Mountains, surrounded by towering peaks and a picturesque water surface that creates perfect reflections.
- Best season: summer and autumn
- Pros: dramatic landscape, water reflections
- Cons: demanding route
- Tips: ideal for active couples who aren’t afraid of challenges. Thanks to the mountain reflections in the lake, photos gain extraordinary depth and a sense of space.

7. Hala Gąsienicowa
Located in the heart of the Tatra Mountains, Hala Gąsienicowa is one of the most beautiful places for photography. The atmospheric mountain hut, open spaces, and view of the Orla Perć massif make it an ideal location for couples who appreciate the raw beauty of nature.
- Best season: year-round
- Pros: wooden huts, Tatra atmosphere
- Cons: large number of tourists during peak season
- Tips: a great option for couples who love traditional mountain atmosphere. It’s one of the most picturesque places in the Tatra Mountains, where you can capture the unique character of highland sessions.

8. Kalatówki
If you dream of a session in a place that offers easy access and amazing views at the same time, Kalatówki will be a great choice. Golden grasses in autumn and the surrounding valleys give photos a unique character.
- Best season: autumn
- Pros: close to Zakopane, easy access
- Cons: quite a few tourists on weekends
- Tips: possibility of organizing a session with an overnight stay at the mountain hut. They offer beautiful views of the surrounding valleys and the Tatra Mountains.
9. Furmanowa
This is one of the lesser-known but incredibly charming places for a wedding outdoor session. Located on a hill above Zakopane, it offers spectacular views of the town and surrounding mountains.
- Best season: year-round
- Pros: amazing view of Zakopane and the entire Tatra range
- Cons: none
- Tips: a wonderful option for an intimate session surrounded by nature. It’s an excellent spot for sunset, where the mountain panorama takes on a special glow.

10. Other Places with Views of the Tatra Mountains
The Tatra Mountains offer many lesser-known but equally beautiful places for a photo session. If you’re looking for something more intimate, it’s worth considering less popular locations.
- Examples: Polana Głodówka, Gubałówka off the main trails, Płazówka
- Tips: it’s worth seeking out lesser-known places to avoid crowds. A huge advantage of hiring a local photographer is that they know less touristy but equally beautiful locations. Such places allow for more relaxed posing and greater intimacy in the frame.

Zakopane Photographer – FAQ About Wedding Photo Sessions in the Tatra Mountains:
Are permits needed for a photo session in Tatra National Park?
Yes, a permit is required for special occasion photography in TPN. I have such a permit, so you don’t need to worry about it. More information can be found here: https://tpn.gov.pl/zalatw-sprawe/wykonywanie-zdjec-fotograficznych
How much does a permit for a wedding photo session in the Tatra Mountains (TPN) cost?
The fee for a photo session in Tatra National Park in 2026 is 200 PLN. The fee is paid online or at the Park office. Remember that it covers the photographer and the couple, and the funds support the protection of Tatra nature. If I’m photographing your session – you don’t need to worry about the TPN fee. It’s included in the session price.
What time is best to start a photo session in Zakopane?
The best light is during the so-called golden hour – right after sunrise or before sunset. In the Tatra Mountains, these hours are magical due to fewer tourists on the trails.
Can we do a session at sunrise?
Yes! Sunrise is the best time for a session in the Tatra Mountains, along with sunset – the light is soft and the trails are empty. However, you need to be ready for very early wake-up calls and sometimes a demanding hike before dawn.
Does a photo session in the Tatra Mountains require physical fitness?
Not every one! Places like Rusinowa Polana or Hala Gąsienicowa are accessible via an easy trail walk. The pace is always adjusted to you. I also photograph in places you can drive directly to or take a cable car, such as Kasprowy Wierch or other spots with mountain views.
Is it worth hiring a guide for harder-to-reach places?
I don’t photograph in places that might be too dangerous, so there’s no need to hire a guide.
How long does a wedding photo session in the Tatra Mountains last?
The session duration depends on the location – in easily accessible places (e.g., Łapszanka) it can last 1-2 hours, while in more remote areas (e.g., Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy) you need to reserve even half a day.
What clothing works for a mountain wedding photo session?
The couple should have comfortable shoes for getting to the location. I leave the choice of footwear for the session to you, but I have nothing against mountain boots. After all, we’re photographing in the mountains 🙂 It’s also worth bringing warm clothing, especially in autumn and winter, and definitely something to eat and drink.
Can you do a wedding photo session in winter?
Yes, but it requires additional preparation – appropriate clothing, checking weather conditions beforehand, and trusting me when it comes to choosing the location.
Can we choose several locations during the session?
I usually photograph one location during a session.
Is a photo session in the Tatra Mountains suitable for every couple?
If you love nature and aren’t afraid of short hikes, the Tatra Mountains are an ideal place. However, if you prefer comfort and a quick session, I’ll suggest another beautiful place with views of the Tatras 🙂
How far in advance do you need to book a session date?
It’s best to book at least 2-3 months in advance, especially if the session is to take place during peak summer season or golden autumn. However, it happens that I book a wedding photo session in the Tatra Mountains from one day to the next. It’s always worth asking about availability 🙂
Do you offer help in choosing a location for the session?
Of course! I advise which locations best match your style and expectations, and also help with logistics and session preparations.
The most important question – will you recommend some places for lunch after the session :)?
Sure! I love local restaurants and will definitely recommend something delicious! 🙂
